Single’s Awareness Day Can Be So Much More

Heart shaped candy boxes, dozens of red roses and couples strolling hand in hand. Love is definitely in the air this Valentine’s Day.

If you don’t have a special someone in your life, don’t be sad! There are plenty of things you can do to make this day special on your own.

Katie Holmes, who went through a highly publicized divorce from her husband of 5 years, Tom Cruise, won’t be moping around all day over the thought of her failed marriage. In an article by Omg! from Yahoo, Holmes was quoted saying “[Suri and I] usually have friends over and make flower arrangements. I’m all about D.I.Y. (do it yourself).”

Don’t be upset if you don’t have a special someone on Valentine’s Day; you’re only young once. You’ll have plenty of years down the line to celebrate this day with someone special.

Even though some may want a relationship, there is no need to rush. After all, college is a time to figure out who you are and what you want to do with your life. Some move away from home for the first time and get a chance to explore the opposite or same sex without mom or dad hovering over and watching their every move.

In a study done by Miriam Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, studies show that “hookups” are replacing romantic relationships on college campuses stating, “forty percent [of freshman women] reported sexual hookups during the first year of college, and less than one in five participants had a sexual hookup each month.”

In the study, Miriam Hospital came to the conclusion that most of the sexual hookups took place during the beginning of an academic year and the lowest rate was during the summer when students are on break.

Although many students are having fun in college and playing the field, a few lucky ones do find someone they are compatible with and develop a more serious relationship. If it does not happen for you, do not stress. You still have plenty of years left to live, no need to settle down just yet.

Of course there is always going to be pros and cons to being single on Valentine’s Day but just remember, some people have it worse.

Imagine all those who work at floral shops, romantic restaurants and postal services who will have thousands of customers flocking to their businesses on Feb.14.

“It’s one of the busiest days of the year for us,” says Robin Sharma, 20, a FedEx employee. “On Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day we get a lot of flowers and edible arrangements. I never get those days off; it’s too busy.”

This year, Valentine’s Day unfortunately falls on a Thursday so others will be stuck in class.

“I have class all day and night,” says Courtney Pask, 19, a Pre-Nursing major at CSU East Bay. “But after class my boyfriend and I will cuddle and eat Oreos. Just like we did last year. It’s our tradition.”

How adorable.

If you’re one of the few who doesn’t believe that the world needs one day to celebrate undying love, I suggest you stay off Facebook and Instagram. Your news feed will probably be filled with giant teddy bears, exquisite jewelry and romantic surprises so if you do not want to see it, #StayAwayFromSocialMedia.

In some cases, social media can prove to be an advantage. In fact, meeting people online is one of the newest ways to snatch someone up. According to Statistic Brain, a website that provides online dating statistics, 17 percent of couples who were married last year began when the couple met on a dating site. In addition, 20 percent of current committed relationships also began online as well.

Stop obsessing over what your friends were treated to on Valentine’s Day and try a dating site instead. Who knows, it could be the start of something more.

To the single readers out there, put away those tissue boxes and stop feeling sorry for yourself. There are plenty of things you can do this Valentine’s Day without a boyfriend or girlfriend in your life. In case you are all out of ideas, here are a few things you can do to make Single’s Awareness Day magical.

Cross something off your bucket list. Take a ferry ride into the city, go skydiving or visit the island of Alcatraz. Do something you have never done before. When you look back and remember Valentine’s Day, you will now remember the time you did something new and thrilling.

Throw a single’s party. What better way to celebrate a day full of love with the people you adore the most. Invite your best friends over, watch some movies, cook some amazing food and have a grand ol’ time.

Take a vacation and do something adventurous. This Valentine’s Day, my best friend and I will be making a road trip up to beautiful Lake Tahoe for some fun in the snow. Who knows, the man of my dreams could be my snowboarding instructor (fingers crossed).

Sure, you can sit around, watch chick flicks and look at pictures of you and your ex but make a change and do something different. Valentine’s Day 2013 should be about you.
