Public Market International Cuisine in Emeryville offers over 20 different food retailers from around the world, creating an innovative and inviting space for college students of all backgrounds.
It has been around since the mid-70s as part of the 1976 Redevelopment Plan of Emeryville’s “Bayfront” area, where it was renovated from a warehouse previously owned by the Paraffin Paint (Pabco) plant.
Once you pass through the plain exterior of the building, you are surrounded by brightly lit signs advertising all the different food delicacies, from Greek to Jamaican, Thai to Afghan, Vietnamese to Chinese.
The Greek cuisine was a pretty popular spot. Some of the “hot” dishes there were pitas, gyros and the well-known baklava dessert.
The Philly Cheesecake spot stayed busy and on the other side of the market the Aguilillia Taqueria was dishing out burritos the size of one’s forearm.
A few other popular eateries included Star Sushi Grill, Sara Mediterranean Deli, Bangkok Thai, and Mediterraneo Pizza and Panini.
Not only is there an ample variety of food, but the dishes are relatively inexpensive.
The vibe is very welcoming and family friendly. Samples are offered and there is a nice eating area equipped with plenty of tables and a big screen TV for sports lovers.
The market also hosts an expansive produce shop, where there is a salad bar and fresh produce section at the entrance and a wall lined with spices, teas and wines from around the world.
They have ordinary juices, sodas, canned foods and household products, but there is also a plentiful variety of local and imported sake, soju, and beer as well as other interesting alcoholic beverages from all over the world. Surprisingly, everything is under $10.
The market is working on adding a few more food retailers, including a highly anticipated seafood spot.
All the shops will remain open during this construction.
Emeryville’s Public Market is an ideal place for food lovers of all ages and is the perfect opportunity to expand one’s taste buds for a reasonable price.
