Gas prices have been influenced by a number of factors and prices can vary by region for many reasons. Due to their significant impact on the economy, household budgets, and environmental considerations, gas prices have a variety of effects on people and society.
Recently California has some of the highest gas taxes in the United States. The Bay Area is no exception, and the combination of federal, state, and local taxes can significantly increase the price of gasoline. The Bay Area is also a very popular area which is a big reason why it’s finding itself at a higher price.
People are going to use gas regardless of the price due to getting to classes, work, or just everyday life. The average gas price for unleaded regular gas has reached $5.82 per gallon. Sometimes gas holds people back from making the trips they want or need, “The price of gas sometimes can hold me back from traveling. For example, sometimes I choose not to go far like to San Jose because it takes too much gas. I like San Jose, but I can’t go as often because it’s far from where I live. Same with work, sometimes I opt. To take Bart since I work in San Francisco, Bart is cheaper.” Stated Bay Area commuter, D’ahna Alveranga.
Many people opt out of taking their cars to save more gas while still paying money for the other options. This puts people still at a financial disadvantage because they are trying to make up for it in the other way. Sometimes it’s a matter of if the person really needs it, “I would say the price of the gas doesn’t stop me from traveling locally. I’m the type of person if I need to go somewhere I’ll make it happen. If I’m traveling further out, gas is definitely on my mind.” says Danielle Mitchell. Companies know that everyone is going to pay the price they set for gas regardless of what’s going on.
Although prices for gas are bad, sometimes corporations do change on a daily due to high demands and regulations. Even some jobs use their own gas or have a partnership with a company to find easier and cheaper gas. Gasoline plays a crucial role in the daily lives of commuters, as it is the primary fuel source for most personal vehicles. Commuters are big gas guzzlers due to having to make such a far drive for work, “Gas always gets expensive at times. I do have to factor in more of a budget nowadays due to the fluctuations.” says William Morales, fellow Waste Management worker. “I drive to work then drive for work so gas is being used a lot of the time,” said Morales.
In conclusion, the cost of gas affects everyone: people, families, businesses, and society as a whole. It has an impact on people’s personal budgets and economic well-being, as well as decisions about energy use, environmental sustainability, and modes of transportation. As a result, changes in gas prices are carefully watched because they might have significant effects. At this rate, the Bay Area will not be seeing the gas prices change anytime soon but let’s hope for a change.
