Little Man Brings Big Laughs

Comedian Roland Powell, aka Lil Duval, performed at CSUEB last Thursday.

This past Thursday at CSU East Bay’s theater, students came out to see comedian Lil Duval.

Duval, whose real name is Roland Powell, goes by the name Duval to pay respect to his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida located in Duval County.

Lil Duval had the theater seats full, for his hour and half long set that kept the crowd in tears from laughing. He talked about topics ranging from sex to whether rapper T.I. was a snitch (this was a question from a member of the audience).

When Lil Duval came to the stage, he received a welcoming ovation from the crowd.

Duval, who stands at 5 feet 4 inches, appeared tiny on stage, but this didn’t stop some women in the crowd from throwing themselves at the comedian. One was even bold enough to stand up and strut her stuff, to which Lil Duval respectfully declined by saying, “I’m cool.” This caused uproar of laughter from the crowd.

The opening act was talented comedienne Candy Churilla. She had some funny jokes, as well as a few cricket calls, that could lead to her having her own show one day with someone else opening for her.

The event was a steal for students. For just $5, students got to see a very funny comedian. For $10 more, students could even bring non-student dates.

CSUEB’s Associated Students, Inc. has been offering comedy shows to students at discounted rates for the last two years. Other acts like Ralphie May and Aries Spears have performed to the joy of many.
