A powerful moment of legacy, symbiosis, and transition shines at Cal State East Bay, where a generation of founders and builders returns not to hold on, but to help steward what comes next. Kelly Cole now leads the foundation her parents built, carrying forward the vision Owen and Erma Smith set in motion when they established the Smith Center for Private Enterprise Studies in 1991. 

Longtime readers of The Pioneer have witnessed similar stories of legacy and ingenuity unfold before — from Startup Weekend’s arrival on campus in 2014 to the launch of Innovate East Bay in 2017 — and the Innovation Festival is the next chapter, with the Up! Club now carrying forward what Startup East Bay began. 

What makes this more than a timeline is the quiet, almost serendipitous way the same commitment keeps showing up on both sides of Carlos Bee Boulevard: campus nurtures what community seeds, and community sustains what campus grows. With Christian Roessler stepping down and the Smith Center searching for its next co-director, the question is how the next chapter of this legacy will unfold.
