Council members and residents of Hayward celebrated the 150th anniversary of the city’s incorporation last Wednesday with a special event consisting of fun activities, live performances, and free merchandise. Attendees gathered at Hayward City Hall Plaza to honor the city’s rich history and diversity while strengthening community bonds.
The celebratory event also highlighted the city’s significant achievements and progress over the years. At the State of the City address on March 12, Hayward mayor Mark Salinas stated that the city invested 80% of its annual budget into public safety, contributing to a notable decrease in crime in 2025 compared to 2024. According to Salinas, vehicle thefts fell 44% in 2025, while vandalism dropped 30%.

The celebration featured a variety of booths from local organizations, including California State University, East Bay, where representatives distributed stickers, pins, and pens to attendees. Children participated in free games and activities, including a rock-climbing wall. A refreshment table offering complimentary water and cupcakes added to the event’s festive atmosphere.
A highlight of the event came when attendees joined Salinas in singing “Happy Birthday” to the city before he cut a ceremonial slice of the 150th birthday cake.
“Our city has grown so much over the years, and today is a celebration of our past, our progress, and the strong community that makes Hayward special,” Salinas said. “Safety, fun, and community spirit go hand in hand here.”
The celebration was a mix of fun, education, and recognition of Hayward’s achievements. Residents left the event with a renewed sense of pride in their city and community, and an appreciation for the ongoing efforts to make Hayward a safe and welcoming place for all.
