After going the better part of six months without an executive director, ASI has finally found a match in Randy K. Saffold.
Saffold was officially named the new executive director on March 18 and will start on April 1.
With experience as the Associate Executive Director for San Jose State University for the past nine years—managing finances, special events and information technology—Saffold appears to be more than qualified for the position.
Because the executive director position has been void for six months, Saffold’s hiring comes as a great relief to the ASI board and staff members.
After the sudden resignation of long-time Director Bob Williams, Dr. Robert Lara stepped in as Interim Executive Director only to be abruptly fired due to personnel issues that administration refused to comment on.
Indeed, the secretive and somewhat shady nature of the administration surrounding the loss of two executive directors in such a short span of time left some students wondering about the direction of ASI.
While board members and other staff members worked to fill the void and continue to be the “official voice of students at CSUEB,” according to their website, the lack of a stable Executive Director left ASI scrambling for a solid foundation on how to base their programs.
Board members are generally excited to welcome Saffold and the staff consensus is that he should be a pleasure to work with. Though the other two candidates that were considered also had personable qualities, Saffold was chosen for his overall experience in the field.
The wide array of problems surrounding the position may seem intimidating for Saffold, but only time will tell if he stands to improve relations ASI has with the students and the administration, or fall to the wayside.
