After only eight weeks of service, the university shuttle to south Hayward Bart will be canceled.

The shuttle, which began in late April, will be discontinued as of June 16.

These changes were made due to a survey in which students requested the extension, with the purpose of supporting students travelling to and from the South Bay.

“The changes were not overwhelmingly positive,” said Derrick Lobo, manager of University Parking and Transportation Services at CSUEB.

Upon making this change, Lobo said the change in shuttle service could be problematic for students riding the Hayward BART shuttle—in order to support the shuttle travelling to South Hayward BART, one bus was taken out of circulation from

the Hayward BART route. This indeed was the case, said Lobo.

Lobo explains that he had high hopes for the shuttle expansion to South Hayward BART, and that he expected that there would have been more riders.

“We gave it a shot and now have numbers to justify why the service will no longer be offered,” said Lobo.

The number of riders travelling on the new route increased over the course of the past quarter, said Lobo. During the first month, there were approximately 57 riders a day, which averages out to two riders per trip.

By the end of the quarter, during the month of May, the shuttle average was about 102 riders per day, which still averages out to about four riders per trip.

“This higher number is due to riders not wanting to wait in line for the Hayward BART shuttle,” said Lobo.

Based on these numbers, he said, they had decided to discontinue the new shuttle route. In Fall 2014, the university will return to having three shuttles in service for Hayward BART route.

“The bus was always pretty empty going to South Hayward, but it was very convenient. I wish the changes would have worked out,” said student Lily Ruterana. “It made my commute a lot faster.”

Due to the expansion, one additional driver was hired. That employee’s status is not known at this time.

For summer quarter, the shuttle service will be offered with a modified schedule. The Castro Valley shuttle will run Monday- Friday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and the Hayward shuttle will have two shuttles. One shuttle will run Monday- Thursday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Fridays 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The second shuttle will run Monday- Thursday 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., and Friday 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

For weekend and late night service, AC Transit will be running for students to get to and from campus.

Exact shuttle times will be posted at the shuttle stops, and can be found online.
