Bat Boy Musical Prepares to Fly at CSUEB

For two weeks starting March 8, the CSU East Bay theatre department will bring a modern twist to an age old tale of love, sorrow and toleration of differences in society with “Bat Boy: The Musical.”

Based on a 1992 Weekly World News article, “Bat Boy Found in West Virginia Cave,” which claimed that a sharp toothed, pointy eared toddler was found deep underground by explorers, “Bat Boy: The Musical” imagines that boy as a teenager who is introduced to society.

Through patient and kind-hearted tutelage from the local veterinarian’s wife, the feral teenage Bat Boy learns how to speak perfect English and becomes a gentleman. Despite this, fear and prejudice by some in the town leads to unfortunate consequences.

“Bat Boy: The Musical” was originally adapted for theatre in 1997 and has since achieved cult status and several awards. The rock-inspired score is by Lawrence O’Keefe, the book is by Keythe Farley and Brian Fleming, sets and projections by Richard Olmsted, costumes by Ulises Alcala with music directed by Sierra Dee and choreographed by Laura Ellis.

The CSUEB Theatre Department will be showing the musical in the University Theatre on March 8, 9, 15 & 16 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 17 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 General and $10 for CSUEB Students. Tickets can be purchased online at csueastbaytickets.com, while reservations can be made by calling 510-885-3118.
