Easter is a holiday usually reserved for church, egg hunting, chocolate eating and spending time with family. But San Francisco, in keeping with its eclectic personality, hosted the Spring Celebration and Easter Parade last weekend, for the 20th time, without all the frills associated with the Easter holiday.
Instead of bunnies, there were dancing cows in roller blades. Instead of pastel colored baskets with cellophane grass, there were hula hoopers, cheer squads, and locals on decorated motorcycles. And instead of having your picture taken with the Easter bunny, you could have your dog photographed surrounded by spring flowers and garlands.
While the differences between a traditional Easter parade and this parade were many, the celebration was still family-oriented. The festivities ran along Union Street from Gough to Fillmore and focused on children’s and family activities, including bounce houses, rides and games, a climbing wall, music, costumed characters, a pony ride and a petting zoo.
Apart from observing the beginning of spring, the event also celebrated Union Street’s best restaurants. Food was served in an outdoor setting for those in attendance.
