Metro Eats: Curry Up Now

Curry Up Now is a hidden gem in downtown San Mateo offering exotic Indian cuisine in a non-traditional way.  The restaurant is a casual bistro with earthy decor, neutral tones and a simple ambiance that is in contrast to the explosive flavors of their cuisine.

Bollywood music plays in the background; keeping patrons busy as they line up to meet an eager cashier ready to take their order.  The smell of curry and spices mark the familiar scent of a traditional Indian restaurant. However, the chalkboard on the wall, adorned with menu offerings written in vibrant colors, is unique.

Restaurant manager Damon Bacerra says the owners are very passionate about what they do and only want to offer the best quality.

“They started the business because they are foodies and they wanted to share their cuisine and culture with the mainstream,” explained Bacerra.

Akash Kapoor founded the restaurant with modest beginnings as a food truck operator. Kapoor and his wife started with one food truck and soon built a following of salivating patrons and grew to three more trucks before eventually opening their very first restaurant.

“I could smell their arrival on Saturday mornings and looked forward to their Chicken Tikka Masala burrito, it’s just something to crave,” said Miki Flood, a patron who lived in San Mateo and remembers getting her first Curry Up entrée from the food truck.

Must Tries:

Deconstructed Samosa (photo above):

Garbanzo beans topped with cheese, pico and choice of Tikka Masala chicken, paneer or tofu.  The heat from fresh jalapenos and sweet chopped onions offset the hearty flavors of the beans and meat.  Spicy Masala Kadhai-Paste and sweet chutney reminds your taste buds that this is still traditional Indian flavor.

Sexy Fries Topped with your choice of Chicken Tikka Masala, Beef, Lamb or Pork Belly:

Sweet potato waffle fries topped with your choice of meat; sprinkles of feta cheese, onions, jalapenos and salsa.  This combination shocks your palate with spicy herbs, curry, savory meats and sweetness.

Holy Moly Ravioli with Tikka Masala Dip:

A fried ravioli that is crunchy but filled with cheese that oozes in your mouth with the first bite.   It is paired with a Masala sauce that is light but savory with a delicate hint of spice and cumin.

Itsy Bitsy Naan Bits:

Tender soft Naan, topped with cheese and masala sauce, sliced jalapenos, fresh greens and sauteed onions with herb seasonings.  The Indian spice creates a forgiving heat that lingers long enough to stimulate your senses.
