PEZ Museum Brings Back Childhood Memories

Growing up, many of us had different types of candies and treats we enjoyed to eat; now there is an entire museum on the childhood classic PEZ candy dispensaries.

The Burlingame Museum of PEZ Memorabilia has been around since 1995 and houses the complete history of PEZ candy dispensaries.

There have been over 800 individually unique PEZ dispensers made since 1950 and over the years, PEZ candy has been labeled an icon of American pop culture.

“I started to collect PEZ because I thought they were silly,” says PEZ collector and owner of the Burlingame Museum of PEZ Memorabilia, Gary Doss.

What first started out as a quirky hobby has now flourished into an entire career.

“The museum is located in Burlingame because I live in Burlingame, and I get to walk to work,” says Doss.

The museum has become a local attraction in the Bay Area and Doss gives daily personal tours to any tourists that come by.

In 2004, the museum added another section of the most popular “classic toys” such as the original Mr. Potato Head, LEGO and Easy-Bake Oven, which are still being made today.

In 2007, the museum was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records for their newest exhibit at the time, “The World’s Largest PEZ Dispensing Machine.”

Besides having PEZ as the attraction in the museum, there was a section added in 2010 where they have banned toys that went off the market for being dangerous to children.

Once visitors finish their tours, there is a gift shop that sells classic, current and collectible PEZ dispensers and a multitude of other classic toys as well.

As most of us know, there aren’t many attractions in the Bay Area that we can participate in without hurting our pockets, but surprisingly this museum offers admission at a reasonable price.

Adults can enjoy the museum for $3; senior citizens and children ages four to 12 are $1 and the first Thursdays of every month are free for everyone.
