San Jose’s Moveable Feast Brings Edible Delights to the Bay Area

Local residents and food enthusiasts enjoying the
variety of cuisine at the weekly event.

Serving an array of ethnic delicacies and desserts to the general public, San Jose’s weekly food truck extravaganza, Moveable Feast, is becoming a popular attraction for Bay Area food lovers.

The event is held at three San Jose locations from 5 to 9 p.m. on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays, with a monthly First Friday event held at the San Mateo Fairgrounds.

Formerly known as SJ Eats, the company strategically changed their name to Moveable Feast to broaden their market to the entire Bay Area.

Event creator and organizer Ryan Sebastian has been grouping together popular Bay Area food trucks since 2010 with a vision of providing a wide variety of delicious street food to customers. He plans on expanding the event to more Bay Area cities.

“I believe the food truck craze is not just a fad, but a trend that will definitely stick around because people are always looking for a variety of delicious ethnic food at an affordable price and [as a way to ] meet new people,” said Sebastian. “It’s great way to try other types of food and people usually make it out to Moveable Feast as a group outing.”

Sebastian is also the owner of Treatbot; a popular karaoke ice cream truck serving an assortment of flavors and mixtures such as the “408,” which consists of vanilla ice cream, chocolate chip cookies and chocolate covered peanuts.

Many of the food trucks offer an inventive fusion of different ethnic food favorites such as Mogo Food Truck, combining Korean barbecue style meats into burrito and taco wraps.

Ten to 15 food trucks can be expected at each event with hundreds of foodies eager to sample the next great culinary fusion.

Window on Wheels Silog Truck (WOW Truck) is a regular at the Moveable Feast events, offering Filipino style breakfast platters served over a plate of banana leaves.

WOW Truck owner Ronnie Hernandez has participated in other food truck meet-ups throughout the Bay Area and believes Moveable Feast attracts the most food truck enthusiasts.

“I love being at Moveable Feast because we see a good number of our regulars as well [as] new enthusiasts who are open to trying new food,” said Hernandez. “We want to make Filipino cuisine be part of the culinary world.”

Other food trucks participating are Chairman with Chinese bao or pork buns, Curry Up Now serving Indian cuisine, and Louisiana Territory, most popular for their Cajun food.

Hundreds of food enthusiasts attend the event regularly and the wait time can vary between 15 to 30 minutes, depending on each food truck.

“I like how I can sample all types of food in one location and the prices are very reasonable,” said San Jose resident Son Tran. “The only drawback is the lines can be ridiculously long, so you should come out early if you want to try some of the more popular food trucks.”

Half Moon Bay’s Sam’s Chowder Truck makes its way to Moveable Feast once a month and draws in crowds by the hundreds with its popular lobster rolls, causing their wait time to be 30 to 45 minutes.
