CSU East Bay’s Old University Union building was closed for more than three hours yesterday morning due to a grease fire in the cafeteria kitchen.
The fire started around 9:30 a.m., according to Sgt. Yolanda Harris of the CSU East Bay Police Department.
“The sprinklers immediately went off and took out the fire,” said Harris.
The Hayward Fire Department also answered the call and reportedly came within minutes.
“The alarm went off and a voice came on and told everyone to leave the building,” said Anthony Mak, a 19-year-old transfer student who was in the building when the fire started.
“We all thought it was a drill, but then we heard sirens. I walked around to see what was going on and saw smoke coming through the kitchen door.”
The fire caused no damage, but Harris mentioned there was a lot of water on the kitchen floor.
The building was reopened by 1:00 p.m.
No one was injured.
