Asian American Donor Program Hosts Celebrity Golf Tournament

On September 20, the Asian American Donor Program (AADP) held its fourth annual Barry Foon Celebrity Golf Tournament at the Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton. Barry Foon passed away in 2007, losing his battle to lymphoma. He was a great friend of AAPD and this golf tournament was created in his honor.
The celebrities that participated in this year’s tournament included former major league baseball athletes Vida Blue, Darren Lewis, Fred Breining and Rich Murray as well as former national hockey league player Bret Hedican. But the biggest star in attendance was 1992 Olympic Gold Medalist and 2008 Dancing with the Stars Champion Kristi Yamaguchi.
All the participants had a chance to meet Kristi at hole 13 of the golf course. People even had the opportunity to take tequila shots before they take their swings. Another popular spot on the course was hole 6. If anyone was able to hit a hole-in-one, he or she would win a brand new 2010 BMW sports car.
“The goals of this golf tournament are to help raise money for Asian American Donor Program and to promote awareness within the multi-ethnic and multi-racial communities about bone marrow and stem cell transplants and the critical need to diversify the National Registry,” said the program’s website.
Nearly 100 people registered for the golf tournament but many others were able to help by donating money. A foursome golf team was $1,100 and any individual golfer was $300. At night a dinner was held along with a silent auction of 11 items which was led by NBC Weekend news anchor Diane Dwyer.
