Campus Sports: News In Brief

Golf: The CSU East Bay women’s golf team captured its first ever tournament title in program history in Arizona last week. Freshman Linda Brown led the team for the second straight tournament, claiming her first individual medalist honors as a Pioneer.

The men’s team competed in the Notre Dame De Namur Invitational this week, finishing in fourth. They will be traveling to UC Santa Cruz on Mar. 25 to 27.

Baseball: The Pioneers dropped three of their four game series over the weekend against CSU Stanislaus. The series traveled back and forth between Stanislaus and Hayward, with the Pioneers only able to take game three of the series by a score of 3-2. All Pioneer defeats over the weekend were decided by one run.

This weekend the Pioneers were scheduled to open up a four-game series against CSU Los Angeles at home on Friday, March 16, that would have continued through Sunday, March 18. However, on account of the weather, the games have been canceled and rescheduled for April.

Softball: The Pioneers traveled to #13 Monterey Bay over the weekend for a four game set. The Pioneers dropped the first three games and were able to avoid the sweep in the final game of the series by defeating the Otters 6-5.

East Bay was scheduled to host CSU Monterey Bay this weekend in another four game set from March 16-17. Due to weather conditions the games have been pushed back to this Saturday and Sunday.

Track and Field: The Pioneer women’s and men’s track teams competed in the Aggie Open Invitational over the weekend on Mar. 10.

The women’s team had three competitors in the 100 meters, with Diaji Smith leading the trio with a time of 15.33, good for 30th place.  Hazel Guitierrez placed 32nd with a time of 17.19 and Kayla Gonzalez placed 33rd with a time of 17.27.

Among the men’s highlights was sprinter Burtland Dixon competing in the 200 meters, finishing with a time of 23.41 to finish in 19th. Dixon earned 29th place honors in the 400 meters with a clocking of 53.00.
