News in Brief: Homecoming Week Wrap Up

Women’s Basketball:
On Friday night Feb. 10, the second and final game of the “Battle of the Bay” series of the year unraveled, ending in a 46-41 score with the Pioneers defeating their cross-bay rivals.
Riding a three-game winning streak, the Pioneers then welcomed nationally ranked Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday night, Feb. 11, who were also in the midst of a three-game winning streak of their own. The game was a thriller as with just four seconds remaining in the game, a jump shot by CSUEB’s Micah Walker pushed the Pioneers past the Broncos, 53-51.
The Pioneers went into Tuesday’s game against Monterey Bay riding a four game winning streak but were defeated by the Otters, 57-68.

Swimming:
The Pioneers have made university history as they finished in a school best, fifth place, at the Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference Championships on Saturday, Feb. 11, to close out the season.
The four-day tournament, which began on Feb. 8, saw East Bay shatter a total of 12 school records on their way to the best finish ever for CSU East Bay.
Included in those records was the 800-yard freestyle race where Jenel Lopez, Alyssa Tenney, Bethany Hoopman and Rachel Knowles combined to beat the school record by thirteen seconds with a time of 7:44.22, which is currently ranked 20th in the country.
Jenel Lopez was a part of seven of the 12 school records that were broken including an individual record in the 50-yard freestyle where she finished with a time of 23.27 ranking 23rd in the nation for Division II.
The Pioneers entered the championships as the ultimate underdog with a smaller roster than the rest of the teams present in the championships, but in the end stunned the rest of the conference and the university.

Baseball:
After dropping their first game of the season, the Pioneers are in the midst of a four-game winning streak after this weekend.
The Pioneers began the streak with a win against Azusa Pacific on Thursday, Feb. 9 by a score of 6-5. They would then go on to sweep a two-game series against Westmont on Saturday and Sunday before closing out the weekend on Sunday, Feb. 12 with a win against Menlo College, 2-0, solidifying their record at 4-1 to begin the season.
They will face off against Northwest Nazarene University this weekend at home.

Softball:
The Pioneers opened the CCAA season scoring a pair of mercy-rule victories, 9-1 and 13-2, over San Francisco State on Friday, Feb. 10.
In Saturday’s double-header against SFSU, the Pioneers had to work to earn a split with the Gators, winning 6-3 before falling 4-3 in the last game of the series. Taking three games from the four-game series against San Francisco over the weekend propels the Pioneers to a 7-3 overall record and a 3-1 conference record.
They will face CSU Dominguez Hills in a two-game series this weekend.
