Guys, Leave Tight Pants to the Ladies

Wearing skinny jeans may be the hip thing to do these days but the tight hugging denim can do more harm than good; studies show that wearing these abnormally tight pants can cause discomfort, urinary tract infections, lower sperm count and even twisted testicles. Ouch.

Fellas, if you’re a hipster who enjoys wearing these tight pants, listen up. Even though Hollywood icons like Russel Brand and One Direction prefer skinny jeans, it doesn’t mean you should wear them as well. I’m only looking out for your best interest when I say they are just not safe.

In a 2012 survey conducted by TENA Men, a company who provides products and services for incontinent individuals, 2,000 men were surveyed on their experience with skinny jeans and the results were not pleasant.

The results from TENA’s survey concluded, “10 percent of men surveyed reported experiencing an unpleasant adverse effect due to wearing tight-fitting jeans.” Of that 10 percent, “50 percent of men suffering from skinny jeans experienced groin discomfort, more than 25 percent suffered bladder problems, and 1 in 5 men experienced a twisted testicle.”

Sounds painful.

Perhaps it’s not the snugness of the pants causing discomfort but the actions performed while wearing them.

Wearing tight pants all day could be incredibly convenient and comfortable but on a hot Bay Area day mixed with a lot of walking and/or physical activity, such as skateboarding, things may start to warm up down south. Health magazine reports that overheating is one of the top  10 proven “sperm killers.”

Along with the side effects from denim hugging too close to your body, some women feel the jeans come off as feminine rather than flattering.

Personally, I admire a man who cares about his looks but tight jeans that flatten your tush and show how scrawny your legs are, aren’t sexy. At all!

Lets face it, we all love when a man flaunts his best features but if you want to show off your lower half, wear shorts, not pants that are smaller than mine. We understand women aren’t the only ones who can be fashionable but there are just some trends you shouldn’t follow; skinny jeans are one of them.

“It leaves nothing to the imagination,” says Alisa Berlin, 22, a History major at CSU East Bay. “It’s not cute for a guy to be able to wear my jeans.”

I have to agree, leave some mystery behind those exceptionally tight trousers. Don’t show us all of your goods right away, keep us pondering for a bit.  Aside from Berlin’s point of view and the health issues that come along with constricting chaps, some men and women are in favor of this fashion trend.

“I believe skinny jeans should be worn on guys,” claims Jeoffrey Gamson, 19, a Psychology major at CSUEB. “It helps those who have a slimmer figure, compliment their figure. They fill them out.”

Gamson isn’t the only one in favor of the skinny jeans look, unfortunately. Some women prefer the snug pants as well.

“I think it depends on the guy,” says Ashley O’Connor, 21, a Liberal Studies major at CSUEB. “Since it’s a popular trend with skater guys, it seems to fit them, both their personality and practically.”

Although it might be convenient for the skaters and punk rockers out there and you may think your rear end looks phenomenal, take a step back and think before you buy a pair of these binding britches.

Are skinny jeans really worth a twisted testicle or a lower sperm count?

You decide.
