Berkeley: In hopes to continue publication, The Daily Californian, UC Berkeley’s student-run newspaper, is seeking the help of the student body, The Bay Citizen reports. The independent newspaper is experiencing an increasing amount of financial troubles and is requesting that the student government approve a $2 fee per semester, which would be tacked on to student fees for the next five years. If approved, the fee would raise nearly $94,000 for the publication, “which is facing a budget deficit of $200,000,” according to The Bay Citizen.

San Jose: Due to university budget cuts, San Jose State University’s policy dedicated to guaranteeing admission to local students who meet the admission requirements is no more, The Bay Citizen reports. The new policy requires that the university still give some priority to local students who are coming in as undeclared majors. UC Berkeley officials told The Bay Citizen that the change may only be temporary.

Union City: On Saturday, Rep. Pete Stark, D-Fremont, will hold two separate town meetings in Fremont and Alameda. Possible topics of discussion will include, “the upcoming congressional agenda, the impact of the House Republican budget on Medicare and other programs, and the status of federal transportation funding,” The Argus reports. The meeting is open to all members of the public, as comments are encouraged.

Oakland: Vitaly B. Troyan, City of Oakland public works director, was the recipient of the American Public Works Association’s Top Ten Public Works Leader of the Year award for 2012. The award gives praise to standout individuals in the profession who make great contributions to their community. “This award for Leader of the Year is the highest honor in the Public Works industry, and I am pleased that Vit was recognized for his efforts in keeping Oakland’s Public Works Agency a top-notch organization,” said City Administrator Deanna J. Santana in a recent City of Oakland press release. Troyan has been in the industry for over 45 years.
