Oakland:
A confrontation between Occupy Oakland protestors and members of the South Africa Project on Monday led to the injury of at least two California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers.
Members of the South Africa Project were speaking out against the violence blacks are ensuing on whites in South Africa, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Occupy Oakland activists gathered to intercept the protest of the pro-white group at the capitol building in Sacramento. The aftermath of the confrontation resulted in the arrest of three Occupy Oakland activists.

Hayward:
Assembly member Mary Hayashi (D-Hayward) recently introduced a new bill into legislation that aims to improve education benefits for military veterans. “AB 2478 will increase veterans’ eligibility for in-state tuition rates at California community colleges,” the San Francisco Chronicle reports, by extending the amount of time veterans’ have to qualify for in-state tuition. Hayashi told the Chronicle the bill was necessary legislation, because “We owe it to our veterans to give them fair opportunity to attend these institutions at in-state rates, and establish a fulfilling and productive life after service in California.”

Santa Clara:
The Santa Clara City Council approved a 40-year lease for the site of the new San Francisco 49ers stadium on Tuesday, which requires construction to begin in 120 days. Located near the Great America theme park, the stadium will feature modern amenities that Candlestick Park currently lacks. Several residents at the meeting expressed discontent for the city council’s decision to build the $1 billion stadium in Santa Clara. The 49ers also announced a labor pact with South Bay unions to help build the stadium, the Mercury News reports.

San Francisco:
The San Francisco Board of Education approved the layoff of 485 teachers, administrators and staff Tuesday night, but considered employee seniority in the decision. Due to annual budget cuts, the San Francisco Unified School District could potentially lose between $83 and $120 million in state funding, Superintendent Carlos Garcia told the San Francisco Examiner. The board was required by law to issue pink slips to school system employees by March 15.
