When it comes to fusion restaurants, there usually isn’t a grey area. Combining two different types of cuisine can either go really well or be a total disaster. Pizza and Curry on Blacow Road in Fremont is the perfect combo of classic Italian-American fare with a bit of an Indian twist.
Located just past Fremont Boulevard on Blacow Road, Pizza and Curry is a hole in the wall. There is a front counter for ordering, and four tables that seat four people each. Most people order their food to-go or use the free delivery service. The small dining room is charming though, boasting lime green walls and a clever mural of an Indian woman making a pizza.
There are around 20 different kinds of specialty Indian pizzas, from innovative mango chaat to the classic chicken tikka. The chicken tikka pizza has garlic sauce, mozzarella cheese, marinated chicken, red oinions, cilantro, and tomatoes. Most of the Indian pizzas do not have marinara sauce, but rather a garlic cream sauce. The garlic sauce compliments the Indian spices on the pizzas better than marinara and rounds out the flavors better than an acidic tomato sauce.
Along with the toppings, the crust of Pizza and Curry’s pies is what I would consider perfect. A crisp bottom with an airy, doughy center, topped with parmesan cheese that is cooked just below the burning point provides the perfect vehicle for the delicious spiced toppings.
There is even a dessert pizza, made with pizza dough, cinnamon, and thinly sliced fresh apples, which is baked until the apples are soft, tender and caramelized.
Along with Indian specialty pizzas, Pizza and Curry also offers up traditional pizza with your standard toppings, along with garlic cheese bread and hot wings.
For a fast, inexpensive and interesting meal, where pizza lovers and Indian food fans can eat in harmony, Pizza and Curry is a delicious alternative to the traditional.
