Bay Area Indian Americans unite to celebrate Republic Day
On Saturday January 26th, Fremont’s Lake Elizabeth transformed into a colorful array of fabrics, with an eclectic beat of sounds and dances in celebration of Indian Republics Day.
It is a national Indian holiday that rejoices the day that the Constitution of India came into action, on January 26, 1950. This constitution enabled a new democratic government system to take form in India, initiating India’s official transition from British rule to an independent, sovereign republic.
The event over the past eight years continues to grow with community participation and audiences of all kinds. The event, which provides music, dance, performance, and free food, has brought crowds in celebration and has reconnected the nostalgia of Indian pride with that of United States democracy.
