Los Gatos Really Knows Halloween

Halloween isn’t just a “kid’s holiday” in Los Gatos.

The downtown area was crowded with thousands of people on Halloween night. The Halloween party had just as many adults as children in attendance, and many people brought their dogs dressed up as well.

From sunset until sunrise, people strolled down the streets wearing their best costumes, while also trying to give others a good scare. A majority of the houses within a five-block radius decorated in an over-the-top fashion, featuring cemeteries in their front yards, along with zombies, vampires and every spooky creature one can imagine.

Those who decorate their houses displayed them proudly, sitting on their front porches handing out candy to the children while also providing entertainment of their own. One couple, dressed as the Pope and a pregnant nun, made the sign of the cross to every child who picked up candy.

Another family, all dressed as zombies, danced the famous choreography to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” on their front lawn.

Lines to collect candy from these houses can go on for more than a block. After 10 p.m., many signs were hung on doors of these houses that read, “out of candy.”

“I bought three thousand pieces of candy from Cosco,” one Los Gatos resident said. “It was gone in two hours.”

For a high-brow community, downtown Los Gatos was anything but conservative in their costumes. Several people dressed as Chilean miners were in attendance, along with gorgeous drag queens dressed as disco divas.

Popular costumes at the Halloween party were Snooki from Jersey Shore and pop icon Lady Gaga. Many people were also dressed as Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland characters, like the Queen of Hearts and the Mad Hatter.

Of course, there were the classic princesses, vampires and werewolves as well. Everyone was wearing a costume – there hardly seemed to be any spectators at all.

Though the cancellation of the Halloween party in the Castro District of San Francisco was disappointing, South Bay residents still embraced the Halloween spirit.
