CSUEB Theatre & Dance Dept. Play about Chinese People Does not Employ Asians

Mr. Jay Chee, a student in the cast of the production, was dropped from the cast of the production, because he refused to engage in the creative work required of any actor in serious theatre, not because of anything he said or wrote.

Further, Mr. Chee wasn’t the only Asian in the cast. The cast is exceptionally diverse and includes Filipino, African-American, Hawaiian/Chinese and Latino actors among others.

The Good Person Of Setzuan is not about China, Chinese history, culture or religion.

The play tells a story, as a parable, that takes place in an imaginary place that the playwright Bertolt Brecht calls Setzuan. The place might be in China or Brazil or Greece or the U.S. – anywhere in a world where money means power and equality is a joke. Brecht asks whether, in any society of this sort, it is possible to be “good” – to be generous and compassionate – or is one forced to be ruthless and selfish in order to merely survive? A worthy question and quite relevant to our times
