Cultural Sensitivity of Play Should be Evaluated by Students

I see that Mr. Chee has brought his concerns to the attention of the campus community (The Pioneer, October, 25).

However, I’m not sure his e-mails will “tell all.”

Students should come to judge for themselves the music and cultural sensitivity shown in the production of “The Good Person of Setzuan” opening November 9 on campus.

They might ask themselves what is being portrayed. Is the play about China? If not, what is it about? What message does the play deliver about humanity? What images of Chinese origin are depicted? What do they represent? Are other images depicted? How do the images support the lessons of the play? Is the cast culturally diverse and, if so, why?  Does it sound like the cast was well rehearsed in the scenes with accompaniment? What does the accompaniment do for the show and its message? And, since Mr. Chee has access to his own e-mails, how does the play relate to the approach he uses to deal with his own situation?
