Letter to the Editor: CSUEB Decision Must Be Overturned

I have read and re-read your editorial, “Citizens United Must Be Overturned,” Thursday, July 12, 2012.

Each reading brings more parallels to mind between the Citizens United decision and the CSU Hayward to East Bay decision.

If Citizens United must be overturned, then CSU East Bay must be overturned. Both offend largely on the same grounds.

On the one side, a small group – nine Supreme Court Justices or one campus president, one chancellor, one board of trustees versus, on the other side, millions of voters or one campus community and one host community.

Nine Supreme Court justices allow money to terribly distort one person, one registered voter, one vote.

One campus president, one chancellor, one board of trustees allow their control of “the research” agenda, the public meetings agenda to terribly reject and restrain strong campus and off campus support for CSU Hayward that is so consistent with the
historical city/county CSU main campus naming patterns of almost all CSUs, and so inconsistent with that public support because CSU in Hayward is in no way uniquely distinguishable from the other CSUs such that it merits rupturing the historical pattern.

I am tempted to paraphrase several of your paragraphs. I will close with just one. Will you follow through?

Yes, “We must always fight for a fair system in which every citizen has an equal voice and overturning” CSU East Bay “is another important step in this fight.”
