San Jose: Dead bodies in pine boxes were discovered underneath the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose. Construction crews were doing work to seismically upgrade the facility in February when they discovered the boxes. There is said to be at least 1,400 of them buried on the site. Santa Clara County counsel Michael Rossi said Tuesday the pine boxes date back to between 1875 and 1935 and belonged to people who couldn’t afford burial elsewhere or whose families couldn’t be contacted.

San Mateo County: A Caltrain heading northbound from Gilroy to San Jose hit and killed someone on the tracks around 7:10 a.m. Wednesday morning at Monterey Road and Southside Drive, the San Jose police said. The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office will have the responsibility of investigating this incident.

San Jose: Dwight E. Bentel, the founder of the Spartan Daily and the Journalism and Mass Communication School at San Jose State University died on Wednesday at a care facility in Saratoga, after suffering a stroke. He was 103. He is survived by a son, David, of Monterey; a granddaughter, Christina Bentel-Martinic of Oakland and a great-granddaughter, Carolina.

Hayward: Firefighters saved two small dogs in a one-alarm fire Tuesday that destroyed an RV in Cherryland, leaving its resident without a home, Alameda County fire officials said. The fire’s cause and origin are under investigation, the Daily Review reports.
