Berkeley: The UC system could face tuition hikes if voters do not approve Gov. Jerry Brown’s tax initiative. If the state doesn’t increase funding by $125 million, administrators say they will have to make drastic campus cuts and possibly consider the mid-year tuition increase. Gov. Brown has stated that the UC and CSU system could both lose nearly $200 million more than has already been cut if his tax initiative is not passed.

Castro Valley: The parents of a two-year-old in Castro Valley have been arrested for child endangerment. This came after the child was attacked by the family dog and suffered lacerations to the head. The parents were arrested after police responded to a report early Tuesday morning and subsequently found the house with the child in disarray. Alameda Sheriff’s Department Sgt. J.D. Nelson said the child endangerment charges stem more from the state of the house than from the dog attack, as the house was not fit for a two-year-old to live in.

Oakland: Oakland Mayor Jean Quan will most likely not be recalled from her position. The “Committee to Recall Mayor Quan” told the Oakland Tribune that it has collected less than 7,000 signatures and 20,000 signatures are needed to move forward with a recall. Quan held a conference on Wednesday in Oakland where she thanked her supporters, saying that she is trying to stay focused on job creation and crime prevention in the city.
