News in Brief

Election – Rick Santorum won the Minnesota and Colorado caucuses and the Missouri primary, scrambling the recent GOP race that seemed to be going in the favor of Mitt Romney winning the nomination.

Local – On Tuesday night Richmond became the first city to pass a measure supporting a statewide initiative to raise taxes on those making more than $1 million yearly. The council passed the vote 6–0–1.

Local – Oakland City Council members met once again to pass a resolution that would prevent future demonstrators from marching on the Port of Oakland. After hours of deliberation, the council failed to come to an agreement. Dissenting council members noted that preventing protestors from disrupting port operations was a violation of civil rights.

State – The federal appeals court declared Tuesday the California voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage to be unconstitutional. The ruling was 2–1 by the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco that will be a historic moment in California history.

National – Washington passed a same-sex marriage bill yesterday but is not likely to take effect immediately. If opponents gather 120,000 signatures then the measure will be put up to a public referendum.

World – The State Department is preparing to slash nearly half the staff at the U.S. embassy in Iraq. The embassy is one of the largest U.S. embassies in the world. The slash marks a decline in America’s diplomatic presence in Iraq.

World – Russia has been taking heat recently from America and her allies for not doing enough to stop the government oppression in Syria. Russia claims to be doing far more than Western nations in trying to solve the current crises.
