Ladies and gentlemen: Let me be the first to welcome you to my inaugural sports column for The Pioneer!  In this section I will make an earnest effort to bring you quality analysis of the professional sports world, riddled with a little bit of my opinion and perhaps a bit of bias if the time warrants.

Now, your sports:

NFL—The Detroit Lions are 5-0! First time since 1956! No longer are they the athe defensive line side of things.  Had you spoken with me preseason, I was calling for the Lions to be a sleeper in that top-heavy division including the Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers and the always competitive Chicago Bears. The Lions greatly improved their defensive core over the offseason and Quarterback Matthew Stafford is healthy.   Have you been watching the Buffalo Bills? They are tied with the New England Bradys at 4-1.  Is Harvard grad Ryan Fitzpatrick channeling his inner Jim Kelly? Who were the scribes fooling on the national level with the Philadelphia Eagles?  The “Dream Team” they called them? Look, Michael Vick historically is a below average-to average quarterback at best.  The numbers just aren’t there. The NFC’s third ranked offense can’t seem to hold on to the ball leading the league in 16 turnovers. Also, that expensive pass defense in Nhamdi Asomugha’s five year and $60 million and Asante Samuel hasn’t been able to help their 1-4 start to the season as well as a sieve of a run defense. Guess who else is 4-1? Your hometown San Francisco 49ers.  That’s all first year coach Jim Harbaugh and his fourth ranked defense in the NFC.  A new coach, a new system and well, they need to win the NFC West, it’s a mess. I’ll have more next time.

Quick Hits:

NHL—Last weekend was opening weekend for the NHL, so welcome back the once defunct Winnipeg Jets as they moved back home from “Hotlanta.”

NBA—First two weeks of the season has been cancelled by Commissioner David Stern due to labor dispute. Surprise. Surprise.

MLB—St. Louis and Milwaukee play for the NL pennant tied 1-1 as Texas and Detroit play for the ALCS with the Rangers leading 2-0.  I’ll bring you more next week on the most exciting season of baseball I have ever witnessed.  Monday night Rangers OF Nelson Cruz belted the MLB’s first ever post-season walk off grand slam home run.  So much for the Phillie Phanatic. He’s watching from home.

Other Sports—Seriously, a man threw a hot dog at Tiger Woods at CordeValle.

That’s all I can squeeze in this week, I apologize sincerely for being so short on information I promise next week will be a lot better.

Thanks for reading and see you next week.
