Oakland Boxer Aims to Bring Belts Home

Andre Ward (left) will be pitted against Carl Froch (right) in the Super Six finale.

The Super Six Press Tour wrapped up in Oakland on August 24 to promote the fight between Oakland’s gold medalist and current World Boxing Association (WBA) super middleweight champion Andre Ward and current World Boxing Council (WBC) super middleweight Champion Carl Froch.

The fight is scheduled to take place on October 29 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Both fighters and their respective camps were in front of Oakland’s City Hall to address the media and fans.

The tournament started in October 2009 with a total of six fighters.

Though the tournament wasn’t as successful as was hoped for, due to injuries, withdraws and replacing fighters, the two finalists were originals in the Super Six tournament.

Andre Ward was the only fighter in the tournament that remained undefeated.

Carl Froch entered the tournament undefeated but the Brit suffered his first professional loss by losing to Mikkel Kessler.  Even though it was a tough loss for Froch, he acknowledges that it was something that helped him focus and train even harder.

“In this tournament I won the title and won the title back so I know what it means to win, I know what it means to taste defeat and the taste of defeat is bitter,” said Froch.  “I think after that loss it gave me a little bit of a kick where I needed it and I put the extra time in the gym.”

Both fighters assured everyone in attendance they will be in the best shape possible come fight night and for good reason—the winner will not only unify two belts in the division but also receive the Super Six Trophy along with The Ring Magazine belt.

With that being said, it is no surprise that both Froch and Ward are confident of victory.

“It’s going to be me and Carl Froch lacing them up,” said Ward.  “I think we have a mutual respect but we are trying to get a mutual prize and he is standing in my way and I am standing in his way and somebody has got to get out the way.”

The Super Six finale will be shown live from Atlantic City Saturday, October 29 on the cable network Showtime.
