After reading the article by The Pioneer editors last week, “Hayward Needs to Invest in Local Sports,” I was immediately happy to see such a strong message in your college paper.
I am a former Hayward High mom and I remember the years when my son was on the football team. Though it was 12 years ago, I remember the struggles with funding and local support. Our team always did well. Our boys were something to truly be proud of, but outside of a small group of parents no one seemed to notice their success.
I read your paper from time to time, and I want to thank you for advocating for an issue that is not only near and dear to my heart, but one that I agree needs to be of prominence for the community. Why wouldn’t local organizations and businesses not want to support their students and athletes? They are not only their prime consumers but also a member of their Hayward family.
It was interesting to read what the financial struggles are facing local schools. Hopefully current parents heed your words and take action like I tried to get so many parents to do in my time. At least the message is out now, and I thank you for relating it.
