Reality Television Celebrities Shouldn’t Be Looked Up To

The airing of Kim Kardashian’s wedding to Kris Humphries drew the attention of many individuals as the two hour-long specials brought in 4.4 million viewers on the first day and 4 million viewers on the second.
Admittedly, I was one of those millions of people that tuned in on both nights.  However, it occurred to me mid-program that I had looked forward to this wedding throughout the weekend like, I assume, many others had.  It was time for me to sort out my priorities and I suggest here that the other 4.4 million who tuned in do the same.
There is nothing wrong with sitting down to a little light-hearted reality television for an evening, but it seems today’s young adults, myself included, have become nothing less than obsessed with watching “celebrities” splash their cash.
The wedding was the third all time most watched show on E!, the first being the season finale of “Keeping Up With The Kardashians.”  That says it all.  Reality shows and trash television are no longer just taking over our television screens; they’re taking over our lives.
Whilst I know some may argue that not all young adults are as susceptible to reality shows and their so-called “celebrities,” which is true, it seems that the majority have a weak spot for them or are developing one.
In a recent Communication class, our professor asked our class of 25 students who the President of Pakistan was.  He was answered with a room of silence rather than that of Asif Zardari.
He then asked if we knew who Snooki was.  He was answered with a room full of raised hands.  Enough said.
For those of you who do not know who Snooki is, and I’m guessing that is a small number of CSU East Bay students, she is a cast member of the reality show “Jersey Shore”.  “Jersey Shore” is MTV’s third most watched series of all time; episodes of the new season have reached 8.5 million viewers.
I am very pleased to say I am not one of the millions of viewers that tunes in to watch the show.   However, I did come out of that Communication class feeling ashamed—and Googled the President of Pakistan.
The Kardashians are experts at doing absolutely nothing and on some level they do need praising for the publicity and money they have generated from that nothing, but referring to them as ‘American Royalty’ as many magazines and websites do is a little too far.
Perhaps it is time we as young, educated adults start looking up to and aspiring to be individuals that have accomplished things other than reality television and promoting diet pills.
