Police Chief Says Goodbye to Oakland

Oakland Police Chief Anthony Batts announced his resignation on Tuesday, reporting that city bureaucracy was preventing him from carrying out the responsibilities his job demanded.
“Rather than a chief managing a diverse department of law enforcement professionals making the streets of Oakland safe, I found myself with limited control but full accountability,” said Batts in his letter of recognition.
The city with the highest crime rate in California has had a difficult time keeping the position filled.  Batts resigned only after serving two years of his three-year contract.
There has been a large amount of speculation that his resignation was a result of his poor relationship with Oakland Mayor Jean Quan.
Mayor Quan refused to comment on Batts’ resignation.
Batts assumed the position of police chief when former Oakland Mayor Ronald Dellums was still in office.
“I came into this organization in October 2009 with my eyes wide open. I understood the challenges of a police department in the city of Oakland,” said Batts in an interview with the Oakland Tribune.
Batts’ will officially leave his position on Nov. 19 and is considering taking a part-time teaching position at Harvard University.
