The boxing fight card that was scheduled for August 27 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose between Gilroy’s Robert Guerrero and Marcos Maidana was cancelled due to a shoulder injury that Guerrero received during training.
“Robert Guerrero injured his shoulder in sparring to the point where it was numb. We’re afraid it is a torn rotator cuff,” Richard Schaffer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, said in a teleconference.
Many people throughout the boxing community seemed to be in an agreement that this fight had the potential to be a fight of the year candidate.
Once the news broke out about the fight, many local boxing fans were very disappointed about the cancellation of the fight.
“I was very upset to hear that the fight was canceled,” said Junior Rodrigues, a big fight fan from San Jose California. “I was counting the days for the fight. I had my tickets ready, it was going to be on HBO and it was going to be right in my back yard. It was a cant-miss.”
However unfortunate, these types of incidents are common in boxing. This is a full contact sport and injuries and postponements happen all the time.
There are times when a fight card may even continue, but because Guerrero’s injury was so close to the fight, a little over a week, it would have been impossible to find a suitable replacement for Maidana.
Local boxing fans are hoping that Guerrero makes a full recovery so the match could finally happen.
