Earthquakes tie Real Valladolid in friendly

The San Jose Earthquakes faced off against and tied the Spanish team Real Valladolid 1-1 in an inter- national friendly on July 16th, 2019 at Avaya Stadium. The friendly match in San Jose was a stop on the La Liga teams preseason tour but the game quickly turned into more than a friendly. Real Valladolid’s Sandro Castillo scored directly from a free kick given in the first half of the match and Real Valladolid substituted a majority of its on field players at the start of the second half, instantly increasing the in- tensity of the match. San Jose matched this move by substituting in its own starters such as Magnus Eriksson, Chris Wondolowski, and Vako and Wondolowski was able to tie the match up by scoring in the second half. Both teams played fiercely until the very last whistle, earning each other’s mutual respect, and showing the potential that MLS teams have to offer compared against larger leagues such as La Liga.
