“Spider-Man: Far From Home” was not just the epic conclusion of over ten years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Infinity Saga,” but the beginning of a new era for Marvel movies. However, one question needs to be answered moving forward: what now?
When the Marvel Cinematic Universe first started, it had admittedly a slow and steady rise to the popularity it has today. While the first Iron Man and Captain America movies had positive reviews, the rest of the so-called “Phase 1” movies left a lot more to be desired.
Following “The Avengers,” expectations from both casual fans and comic book fans suddenly rose. Subsequent films and their trailers got everyone around the world talking. Seeing characters, such as the Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Thanos, all in live-action had left an impression on everyone.
What happens next following “Spider-Man: Far From Home?” Gone are Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Chris Evans’ Captain America. Mainstays like Thor and the Hulk are still an uncertainty, although Thor actor Chris Hemsworth has expressed a willingness to further act as Thor in the MCU.
In regards to new, future films, another Spider-Man film will likely follow suit after “Far From Home’s” shocking mid-credits scene. Scarlett Johanson’s “Black Widow” prequel and a film based on The Eternals are also in the works.
Many of the films, including the ones previously released, are clearly catered towards the comic book fans, but casual fans are still kept in mind. Some people know Black Widow well enough, but Marvel Studios needs to be able to make new and returning characters, such as The Eternals, Captain Marvel, and Doctor Strange, relatable to both audiences.
Disney is also implementing several new spin-off series for Loki, Falcon and Winter Soldier, and Scarlet Witch and Vision, for their new streaming services. Again, only time will tell if fans all around will be invested in what Marvel Studios will offer in the future.
Although “Avengers: Endgame” felt like the definitive end to over ten years of Marvel Studios’ hard work, the latest Spider-Man movie got people talking about what’s next for at least the web-slinger. Now it is up to Marvel Studios to keep fan interest up for the other films they have planned for years to come.
