Turf Club Is Easily One of Hayward’s Best Bars

At first glance, Turf Club looks like most other bars; however, the lush patio makes for a perfect place to socialize.

With a sprawling outdoor patio, a wide variety of clientele and weekly community events, Turf Club isn’t a typical bar you would expect to find in downtown Hayward.

Located in downtown Hayward on the corner of A Street and Main is the Turf Club, one of Hayward’s best bars and hang out spots.

Even though Turf Club really is more than just a bar, that doesn’t mean the bar is lacking. Turf Club’s full bar has a diverse variety of beer on tap, and very experienced, friendly bartenders, who provide fast service with drinks at a fair price.

Customers can enjoy their drinks inside the 1,900-square foot bar, or outside on the patio. The patio and outdoor area really stand out at Turf Club. Aside from a fancy restaurant, a bar’s outdoor seating area as nice as this one would be very hard to find. Lush, green plants, heat lamps, plenty of seating, and even a small pond with turtles make up a large, comfortable environment. The patio is put to good use every Thursday from 5-8 p.m., when bartender Dave Muñoz helps cook up a barbecue dinner.

Although Turf Club is listed as a gay bar online, Muñoz says that Turf Club isn’t just for one type of person. “We have a very eclectic clientele,” said Muñoz. “Everyone is welcomed and accepted here.”

Indeed, Turf Club does have an array of patrons. Students, employees from neighboring businesses, adults and even out-of-towners are regulars at Turf Club because of the inviting, fun atmosphere. Friday and Saturday nights are quite busy, with a bouncer and security making everyone feel welcome and safe (and do not ask for a cover charge!)

Turf Club offers far more socializing opportunities than typical darts and pool by integrating activities into the otherwise monotonous bar scene, hoping to see the community come together.

“This isn’t just another ‘watering hole,’ it’s a social environment,” said Muñoz. “We really want people to have fun while they’re here.”

Other than Thursday night barbecue, Turf Club is planning an Easter Extravaganza for April 24, where they will have Easter Egg hunts and various contests, as well as a Taurus Party on April 30, celebrating the Taurus birthday with live entertainment, auctions and food.

Turf Club emphasizes a sense of camaraderie that other bars are lacking. It is obvious that Turf Club is dedicated to reaching out and entertaining the masses, while bringing all types of people from the community together.

“A lot of gay bars started out as more of a community thing,” said Muñoz. “It was a safe environment for people to meet friends and socialize. We still want to be a part of that.”
