The Gamezone in the Old University Union at California State University, East Bay is a place where students can go when they want a distraction from classes or just to relax.
The area inside Gamezone consists of an indoor recreational section as well as a custom gaming section comprised of all the latest consoles and HDTVs known as the Gamecave.
“I started coming here my freshman year and ever since then I sort of settled in and they really helped me out here,” said CSUEB student and Gamezone employee Jose Gomez.
Students of all grade levels come to enjoy this free resource on campus and tournaments often become a spectacle in the Old Union where Yu-gi-oh matches and poker games draw large crowds. Gamezone offers an array of tournaments including board games, air hockey, foosball, pool, video games, card games and indoor basketball hooping.
“We have a poker game coming up and a Dragon Ball game in a few months,” said Gomez. “There’s a tournament at the end of every semester and the winner gets a t-shirt, their own page in our winner binder, and their face on our wall.”

“Even though I work here, I still find myself coming in before classes throughout the week and hang with my friends and coworkers,”

— Adrien, console gamer

There are between three and four tournaments held per month for a variety of games. Winners and champions of a game get their picture put in the Gamezone’s winner catalog, a framed picture on the wall, and are given an official Gamezone shirt.
“Even though I work here, I still find myself coming in before classes throughout the week and hang with my friends and coworkers,” said Adrien, a third year who is also a console gamer.
Gamezone is open Monday – Friday from 10am-10pm and all students are welcome. Students can rent games and equipment from the Gamezone by using your Baycard at the front desk.
