Beware The Bedroom Burglar

University police report that 16 burglaries occured on campus in the 2009-2010 school year.

Several dorm burglaries have been reported since the 2009-2010 school year began, according to CSU East Bay’s crime statistics.

The Hayward Hills Campus CLERY Crime Statistics reports there were 16 on-campus burglaries last school year. It is uncertain how many have already occurred this year.

Travis Sturgis, a 21-year-old business major, came back from his month-long winter vacation on Monday morning to discover that his 24-inch Vizio flat-screen TV, including his sound system, had been stolen from his dorm room.

“I was shocked at first,” said Sturgis. “Then I started to feel sad, and then I got mad. In the end I was just disappointed that someone would do this to a student.”

Michael Lin, Sturgis’ housemate, also stated that when he got back on Sunday night, he walked in his room and realized that his duffel bag was pulled out from under his bed and his drawers were also pulled out as if they had been searched.

Lin said he took all of his belongings with him during the break.

“I feel safe when we have people in the house,” said Lin, 21. “But if everyone leaves and we’re on a break, I don’t feel safe leaving my stuff there.”

When spoken to by police, the two housemates were told that there was no sign of forced entry and that it would be very unlikely they would get their belongings back. Police told Sturgis that they would open an investigation, but that they hope he has insurance.

Trevor Ram, a former CSUEB engineering major, was among those who reported a burglary last year.

“I felt naked,” said Ram, 21. “I was immediately suspicious of everyone around me— even my roommates, people I live with.”

Ram said that his feelings of suspicion linger even long after the burglary.

“It’s unfortunate that when I think about my roommate of two years,” said Ram. “The first thing I’ll think about is, ‘oh, the guy that might have stolen my stuff.’ It’s unfortunate that some random idiot ruined our relationship to some degree.”

The property stolen from Ram was never found.
