California Hotel, with the help of People’s Grocery, opened their farm to the West Oakland community as part of their Black History Month celebration. It was once a music venue but later converted into low-income housing and is currently home to one of West Oakland’s organic urban farms. The People’s Grocery, a non-profit organization that aims to promote healthy eating, maintains and runs the farm. The event began on Friday evening with a discussion panel and dance party, and continued Saturday morning with tours of the farm, herb planting and live entertainment.
