Summer is Almost Here, and That Means It’s Fishing Time!

The weather may not be showing it lately, but summer is right around the corner and it’s time to start thinking about life after finals.

What a wonderful thing to think about.

One of the most relaxing summer activities has to be fishing, and the East Bay has some fantastic fishing spots to enjoy.

Whether you have your own gear or you need to rent, there’s a lake close by that can accommodate everyone, from first timers to even the most experienced anglers.

It’s important to note that to fish at any lake, you first need to purchase a fishing license.

They are available at most sporting good and grocery stores. One of the most popular local lakes around is Lake Chabot in Castro Valley. It is a man-made lake with great scenery and hiking trails and, of course, fishing.

Lake Chabot is open for fishing all year, and offers boat rentals for those that don’t want to sit on the shore. There is also a café open next to the lake for those who don’t catch anything.

Another popular Bay Area fishing spot is Lake Del Valle in Livermore.

As the gateway to the Ohlone Wilderness Trail, Del Valle is a great place for camping, hiking, horseback riding and other outdoor activities. The fishing at Del Valle is excellent.

Regularly restocked with trout and catfish, Del Valle is a great place to go if you’re new to the sport. It also is one of the only lakes around that allows you to bring your own boat.

The closest lake to Cal State East Bay is Lake Don Castro, right off of the 580 freeway near Grove Way. It is surprisingly scenic given its urban surroundings. There are 101 acres of green lawns, sandy beaches and designated swimming areas.

Although it’s not particularly known for its superb fishing, the lake is regularly stocked with fish and has many species, so go throw your line in the water and you might get lucky.

Next to Highway 24 and 13 in Oakland, the Temescal Regional Recreation area is a great spot for those that live to the north of campus. Like other east bay fishing spots, Lake Temescal features hiking, biking, fishing and swimming, and it is a great place to spend the afternoon with friends or family.

The fishing is somewhat limited, but there are fish in the water, so a good plan might be to just stick your pole in the sand on the beach and go have fun. There are many other parks within the East Bay Regional Parks District all around the bay. For more on these or other parks and fishing spots, go to ebparks.org.
