San Francisco Joins D.C. In Rally

Last Saturday, more than 700 hundred people gathered in front of the San Francisco Civic Center to support the Daily Show’s “Rally to Restore Sanity,” which was streamed live from the Washington D.C. event via satellite.

The big screen set up for the onlookers broadcasted from 9:00 am to noon. The rally, held in conjunction with Washington D.C and San Francisco, had a series of performers and comedians until 3 p.m.

There were three comedians from the Daily Show and The Colbert Report, including hosts Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. The performance also included San Francisco Mind Trip and male belly dancers.

“There are over 40 official Rallies across the country that we understand— upward of a hundred across the whole world,” said Catherine, one of the coordinators of the San Francisco rally.

Stewart, on his Comedy Central program, proposed the “Rally to Restore Sanity” to bring attention to the negative television media and that people just get along.

When news media such as MSNBC and Fox continually report on political fighting, a lot of citizens, according to Stewart, are frustrated with the large quantity of broadcasts about the political matters which really don’t matter to most citizens.

Media and government totally ignored the middle ground’s struggle for sensibility.

“Neither Tammy [his wife] or I have ever been to a rally before,” said Bob Estes, who attended the San Francisco event.

“We went to this one to add some support to the ideas behind the rally that American politics is driven by the extremes, that the news programs do little to clarify issues, and in their search for ratings, tend to amplify conflicts instead of investigating and informing us about them—that, for the most part, it’s not us against them, that we are all more alike than the media suggests.

Politics and the driving forces behind it, in America, are a bit out of control.”
