Academic Senate Looks at Increasing Student Fees

The California State University Board of Trustees recently proposed a bill aimed at raising student fees for those who repeat courses or take an overload of courses, according to a resolution from the Executive Committee of the Academic Senate at CSU East Bay.

Currently, the fee structure is such that students are charged depending on whether they enroll for six quarter units or less, or for more than six units and does not discourage students for taking beyond eight units. If the resolution passes, a referendum will be put on next spring’s ballot for the students to vote on.

The Academic Senate of CSUEB, which resolves the fee structure for resident students of the CSU system, has sent a resolution to the Statewide Academic Senate stating that the fees should be per unit so there no more concerns about students taking courses just because they are technically free.

The Academic Senate believes students take non-required elective classes, and that the current state of the fee structure gives little incentive for students to take high unit majors.

The fees should be $848 for the first four quarter units and $89 per quarter unit beyond four so that full-time 15 unit students are paying the same amount as under the current fee structure reads the resolution.

If the resolution is approved by the student body, the increase will take effect in fall 2014.
